I’ll be the first to admit that I’m horrible when it comes to cleaning my brushes. I’ll just buy a new one when they get too gross. Not to say I haven’t tried cleaning them before though – I’ve tried soaking in a bucket of soap and I’ve also given these a whirl. Neither gave great results, and I’d rather spend $8 than spend an hour cleaning brushes.
Enter Best Brush Forward, a small business created by a fellow horsewoman. BBF makes brush bombs, aka bath bombs for brushes. I love this method of product delivery (shoutout to Myst Equine’s liniment bombs!) It’s portable, easy, and fun. Yay!
They come in pack of 13 in a variety of scents (Peppermint & Vanilla is my favorite) and include instructions on how to use them:
- Fill a 3-5 gallon bucket with warm water
- Toss in a Best Brush Forward brush bomb
- 3. Toss your brushes in
- Soak for 20-60 min
- Feed your pony a peppermint
- Rinse your brushes and let dry
I followed the steps with the exception of doing it in my kitchen sink as it’s been raining, and I fed the peppermint to my pony beforehand 😁
And did that little heart shaped bomb work? Yes. SO well. Better than I was expecting, honestly. I didn’t take any before photos because in my excitement I forgot (whoops), but take my word – this brush was almost black.
My brushes were literally sparkling clean. And the best part? I pretty much did nothing. No scrubbing, just a soak and a light rinse. All the gunk at the base was gone, and they smelled amazing.
I’m going to make a bold statement here: everyone with horses needs these. For $15, you get 13 cleanings – that’ll last you over a year if you clean your brushes once a month, and Lord knows I don’t do that. You can also use them for cleaning bell boots, jump boots, synthetic girths, etc. I’m hoping more frequent brush cleanings will help keep my current set of brushes around for longer and therefore reduce waste. Clean brushes mean less dirt and bacteria, less fungus, less skin irritations, and a cleaner horse. That’s a win all around in my book. Now, who’s down for a brush cleaning party? 🎉
