Safe & Cute: Equestrian Face Coverings

I’ve always thought face masks were a good idea. Face masks have been a staple in Japan for long before this pandemic, and I think it’s so smart. It’s a courtesy to others to keep your germs in, and it’s better than nothing when it comes to protecting yourself from breathing in the germs of others as well as dust, allergens, and other airborne pollutants. Just think about it…do you want to be breathing in the air of strangers? Me neither. I’ve always had a hard time understanding why so many people here view them as such strange objects – to be honest it’s so nice being able to wear them in Japan and not have anyone look at you like you’re a freak or diseased. As an asthmatic with chronic allergies, I’ve always had face masks on hand for when I know I’ll be in a dusty environment, but I always garnered weird looks and gotten asked with contempt, “why are you wearing a mask?” Another benefit to face masks it that it keeps your breath moist, which keeps your sinuses from drying out, like a personal humidifier.

A few equestrian companies have come out with some super cute and useful options for non-medical face coverings, so you can stay safe all while supporting an equestrian small biz – a win-win in my book!

The Hannah from CALLIDAE

I’ve been a fan of these versatile pop-over neck kerchiefs since they launched, but I bought 2 more to have on hand for outings to the barn or grocery store. Made to keep your neck protected from the sun’s harmful rays, the Hannah is made from breathable stretch material and trimmed with a cotton border that comes in a variety of patterns. They’re easy to pull up over your nose and mouth and are breathable and comfortable.

Hunt Seat Paper Co. Reversible Face Mask

Amy brought her design A-game with this mask – it’s reversible, has her cute logo, and is FREE with any purchase over $50 (while supplies last). You can also preorder one by itself for $15. I can’t wait to get mine!

The Gaiter Mask from Mare Goods

I don’t personally own one of these, but they look like they would be a great option for a face covering and offer a variety of uses for later. They come in a variety of Mare Goods’ signature prints.

I encourage you to choose to wear a face covering/mask for the safety of yourself and others. Stay safe <3

If you or someone you know is part of the at-risk population or in the medical/care field and is in need of a mask, Solid Citizen Equestrian is donating surgical masks, absolutely free. You can get in touch by DMing them on Instagram.
